How to Make Your Small Bathroom Appear Bigger

How to Make Your Small Bathroom Appear Bigger

One of the biggest reasons why people are dissatisfied with their home is the lack of space, and in Britain we have some of the smallest new-builds in the whole of Europe. Almost half of those surveyed by the Royal Institute of British Architects said that they don’t have enough room for their furniture and 57% said that there wasn’t enough room for storage. Therefore, optimising the space that we do have is vital in order to enjoy our homes.

When it comes to decor or renovation, bathrooms are usually the last room to get a look in. However, men spend an average of one year, six months and 15 days in the bathroom throughout their lifetime, and for women it’s a month longer. Therefore, making it easy to move around your bathroom, or at least make it appear bigger, is a great way to make you feel much happier about your home.

Make Use of Light

It’s advice as old as time itself, but allowing natural light into a room creates the effect of open space. Remove clutter from your windowsill and use frosted glass instead of curtains or blinds if possible.

If you don’t have a window in your bathroom, then don’t opt for a hanging light shade as it will make the room appear smaller. Instead, choose spotlights in various places around the bathroom, or at least put up an overhead light that doesn’t invade your vertical space.

To make the most of the light you do have, use bright Porcelanosa tiles on the walls to optimise reflection. If you add a feature with darker tiles, create a focal point that will make the space around it appear bigger. Juxtaposing the dark and light will create a Hollywood-style glamour that will make any bathroom a pleasure to be in.

Get Rid of the Shower Curtain

Using a glass screen instead of the traditional shower curtain will make a bathroom appear bigger for two reasons. Firstly, it physically takes up less space because it’s rigid. Secondly, using frosted glass instead of an opaque curtain will mean you’re able to see wall-to-wall in a bathroom, thus being able to see more space will make it appear as though there is more space.

Make Your Floor a Feature

Utilising medium to large floor tiles can also be used to make your space look bigger than it is, especially by using a grout that’s a similar colour to that of the tiles. By also blending the colour of the walls to that of the floor, you will create a more integrated space and an illusion of a much wider floor.

Hang Your Fittings in the Corner

By using the corners of the bathroom to house products instead of the middle of the room, it will make the space feel a lot less cramped as everything is out of the way.
