Small Kitchen? No Problem!
Everyone dreams of having a large kitchen-diner which is big enough to cook in, eat in and entertain guests. Unfortunately for many of us, the reality is very much “making do” with what space is available. However, this doesn’t mean that your kitchen has to lack style.
Are you looking to spice up your small kitchen? We’ve put together some of our favourite ideas to help you get more out of your space.
Open Storage
One of the biggest mistakes in small kitchens is the amount of cabinets in the room. They can make the room look overcrowded, boxy and very closed in – which is a big problem for kitchens that already have very little space. A good way to solve this is to open up your cupboards and invest in some open storage. This will make the room appear a lot more spacious! Plus; you get to show off all your favourite mugs and plates! You could even hang up your pots and pans on a pot rack for a unique and traditional touch.
Lighting
When it comes to creating the illusion of space in any room in the house, there is one “trick” that always seems to do the job – using lighting. Lighting is one of the best ways to make a room appear bigger than it actually is. We love the idea of putting lights under cabinets and counters. This doesn’t just make your kitchen appear larger and more pleasing, it’s also very chic and looks extremely modern.
Keep Everything Light & Keep Everything Bright
You can make small kitchens appear a lot larger than they are by choosing reflective surfaces, ceramic tile and marble countertops, and by using a lot of stainless steel. This is because light – natural and artificial- is able to bounce off these materials and magnify the effects of the lighting. Reflective surfaces and stainless steel appliances will distribute existing light throughout your kitchen.
Keeping your walls white can also help to make your kitchen appear larger than it actually is. This doesn’t have to be boring though, there are lots of contemporary and sleek options available.
Focus on the Vertical Space
When it comes to redesigning a small kitchen, it’s important that you take advantage of the vertical space that you have. There are lots of different ways in which you can really maximise the space that you do have. For example, you could choose tall cabinets that are used to store and display items that you don’t need to use as often or items that are strictly decorative. A lot of people choose small cabinets that can be stacked on top of each other!
